Computer-science education funding approved by state

Washington state has allocated the funding necessary to begin a computer science education training program in high schools in the state.

The state budget, signed Tuesday night, allocates $2 million for 2016-17 to train high school teachers to teach computer science and set up computer science programs in some schools across the state.

Washington state’s funding is conditional on the funds matched by private donors, which sponsors of the program are confident they will get.

State budget boosts Bremerton High counseling services

Funding for counselors at Bremerton High School is included in the supplemental state budget, which passed Tuesday.

Rep. Drew Hansen, D-Bainbridge Island and chairman of the House Higher Education Committee, in January asked College Success Foundation to come up with a proposal to partner with Bremerton School District. The foundation, based in Issaquah, provides counselors and support to help raise scholarships in districts with high numbers of disadvantaged students.

Rep. Drew Hansen, D-Bainbridge Island, worked with Washington State University to bring an electrical engineering program to OC and with Western Washington University to get a cybersecurity degree. WSU already offers mechanical engineering at OC, and Western has degrees in environmental policy, environmental science and business administration. A bachelor’s in nursing also is available.

OLYMPIA – More lower- and middle-income students will get a chance to go to college and gain high-demand skills under a bill by Rep. Drew Hansen that was signed into law by Gov. Jay Inslee.
